Problem

Skin is made up of about 70% water; the epidermis of the skin retains about 20% – 30% of that water. The hydrolipidic film is a barrier against germs and keeps the moisture within your skin. However, if this film gets damaged in some way the skin can become dehydrated and the skin suffers from a lack of water. Sufferers tends to complain that their makeup won’t stay on or will go patchy as the skin tries to soak in the water contained in foundations.

Causes

Aging is one of the main causes of dehydrated skin, whether that is premature or extrinsic aging. Naturally the body slows down and will not produce sufficient secretions that will keep skin hydrated. Blood flow to the skin also decline with age and this slows down delivery of vital nutrients to the skin surface. The external environment, both extreme cold and heat also cause the skin to dry out and water to evaporate from the skin.

Diet and lifestyle are also a problem and we often deprive ourselves of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) in the name of a healthy fat-free diet also vegetarian diets can also contribute to a shortage in certain protein and vitamins essential to keep up with skin regeneration. The result of this can be chronic dryness, itchiness, scaling and thinning. Alcohol and medications can also aggravate the condition. Dehydrated skin also tends to be more sensitive and can be further aggravated by cosmetic products.
